Residency Planning Tool

Paraguay Visit Planner

Track your residency visit requirements and plan around Paraguay's 12-month temporary-residency rule and 36-month permanent-residency rule.

The 12-Month Rule

To maintain temporary residency in Paraguay, you must not be outside of Paraguay for more than 12 months from the issue date of your temporary residency. Use the calculator below to make sure you stay in compliance.

This tool sits alongside maintaining residency and temporary vs permanent residency. It is designed for planning, not legal advice.

Calculate Your Visits

This calculator uses your temporary residency issue date as the start of the first 12-month period. If you later visit Paraguay, the 12-month clock resets from the day you exited Paraguay.

Where do I find the issue date? On the back of the card beside the field Vence:

How the 12-Month Rule Works

1

Issue Date Starts the Clock

Your first 12-month period starts from the issue date of your temporary residency.

2

Each Exit Resets the Clock

After a later trip, the next 12-month period starts again from the day you left Paraguay.

3

Do Not Exceed 12 Months

Plan each next trip before 12 months pass from the issue date or your most recent exit.

Visit Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Be sure to get a stamp in your passport at official Paraguay immigration checkpoints when you enter and exit the country. If you do not get a stamp, your trip might not be recognized and your residency could be in jeopardy.
Be cautious. See our page about one-trip residency scams for details.
Your temporary residency will be at risk of being cancelled and you may not be able to apply for permanent residency. You might have to start the two-year temporary residency process from the beginning again.
The law was always there but not enforced. In the past, there were times when the 12-month absence rule was not being enforced, so people still think they do not need to maintain their temporary residency properly. The government now actively enforces this rule.
Once you have permanent residency, the requirement is that you must not be outside of Paraguay for longer than 3 years. So make sure to visit at least one day every three years.
