Note: To maintain temporary residency and qualify for permanent residency, you must visit Paraguay at least once every 12 months. See our visit requirements guide for details.

Once your temporary residency is approved, you'll receive your temporary residency card. RUC (tax ID) setup is available as a separate service, and we can advise on banking requirements.

What You Receive

  • Residency Card - Official proof
  • RUC - Tax ID (separate service)

Realistic Timeline

Generally it takes 90 days from the date of application for your residency card to be ready. It can vary based on government processing times.

Phase Timeline What Controls It
Document Preparation 2-4 weeks You (apostille speed in your country)
Application Submission 1 week Us
Government Processing 90 days Migraciones (government)

* Government processing times are estimates based on current averages. We cannot guarantee specific timelines as they depend on factors outside our control.

After You Get Residency

Maintaining Residency

Temporary stage: Visit every 12 months. Permanent stage: Visit every 36 months.

  • Temporary: Visit once every 12 months
  • Permanent: Visit once every 36 months
  • No minimum days required per visit

Important: These rules are increasingly enforced. Non-compliance risks denial/cancellation outcomes. See maintaining residency guide.

Path to Citizenship

  • Eligible after 3 years permanent residency
  • Basic Spanish proficiency required
  • Dual citizenship outcomes depend on Paraguay constitutional/treaty framework and your home-country law; verify your home-country consequences before naturalization

Dual Citizenship Context: Paraguay's constitution permits dual citizenship, and reciprocity treaties exist with certain countries. The citizenship oath includes verbal renunciation, but Paraguay does not verify actual renunciation. However, your home-country citizenship law controls whether acquiring Paraguayan nationality affects your original citizenship. Always verify your home-country consequences before naturalizing.

Banking Access

With your Cédula, you can open personal bank accounts in Paraguay. Banking access has tiers and processing realities:

  • Most clients start with a basic personal account and later qualify for expanded features
  • Larger transfers typically require source-of-funds documentation
  • Business accounts require more documentation and longer review than personal
  • Cédula enables access but final approval and features remain bank-dependent

Banking: A Cédula enables access, but final account approval and features remain at the bank's discretion. We can advise on the process during your application.

Banking Strategy Overview

1. Local Operations Account

For daily expenses, tax payments, local transactions. Limited deposit capacity but necessary for Paraguay life.

2. International Banking/Brokerage

For wealth storage, investments, and larger transactions. Options vary by your home country.

3. Compliance Documentation

Source-of-funds records, tax filings, proof of income. Required for account upgrades and larger transfers.

Important: Bank account approval is never guaranteed. Each bank has discretionary approval processes based on their risk assessment.
